I have a question. Is first person writing considered lower quality than third?

I don't really think it matters, actually. There have been several great works written in first person and third person.

I always felt like writing in first person was an odd thing to do, but for me it was always significantly easier to convey a character's emotions and thoughts that way.

I feel like a lot of people make fun of 1st person writing because a lot of YA fiction is written this way and it's easier to write for a solitary character.

With 3rd person (be it omniscient or limited), you have to be able to focus on multiple characters and convey their thoughts and feelings without constantly saying, "So and so character thought this" etc.

Also, this is called Third Person Limited.

Third person omniscient would be knowing the thoughts and feelings of all characters.

Looks more like Blood Meridian to me given the mention of Brady, Texas and cattlebuyers. The Road was an apocalyptic tale about a nameless man and his son.

Blood Meridian: The majority of the narrative follows a teenager referred to only as "the kid," with the bulk of the text devoted to his experiences with the Glanton gang, a historical group of scalp hunters who massacred Native Americans and others in the United States–Mexico borderlands from 1849 to 1850 for bounty, pleasure, and eventually out of sheer compulsion.

The role of antagonist is gradually filled by Judge Holden, a huge, well-educated man depicted as completely bald from head to toe. Holden is the most philosophical of the scalp hunters and appears remarkably well-educated; however, he perceives the world as fatalistic and liable to an endless cycle of bloody conquest, with human nature defined by violence; he asserts, ultimately, that "War is god."
